The Elephant
House at Cologne Zoo,
built in 1863 in the Moorish style, and
originally intended to be temperorary
only, turned out to be very long
lasting. Finally a new Elephant Park
was opened on 19.09.2004. This new
project took into consideration the latest
knowledge about the way of life
of Asian elephants and the best way
to look after them in zoos.
|
Contrary
to the traditional "hands-on"
approach by the keepers when in close
contact with tamed animals, here a
"hands-off" approach has been adopted,
meaning that no humans actually enter
the herd of elephants.

The
indoor and outdoor areas
were designed to be as close
as possible to the natural habitat,
at the same time incorporating
modern archtitecture and the
requirements of a zoo.

Installed
on the supporting
columns are more than
50 Fluxa C area floodlights,
each equipped with a 400 W
metal halide lamp. The
luminaires are installed
alternately as up and down-
lights. This allows uniform
architectural illumination of the
ceiling and at the same
time suitable levels of
illuminance for the elephants
on the floor. The high
IP rating and the robust
construction of the light
fittings make them
maintenance-friendly.

Above the elephants
is a monumental
5,000 M² roof structure, reminiscent of
the leaf canopy of a forest.
